Get Your Tickets for the SCYPA Members-Only Wine Tasting Event

wineCome join the Simcoe County Young Professionals Association and experience a little taste of Italy.

For the first time ever, SCYPA is hosting a Wine and Cheese Tasting event at Gio’s Italian Restaurante (36 Anne St. N., Barrie), on Tuesday, March 11th, 2014.

Featuring exclusively Italian wines, Chris Price, Gio’s wine dealer, will be guiding us while we explore four different Italian wines (3 reds and 1 white), each indicatively paired with a cheese or small appetizer prepared specifically for our event (please note that while this event does include some food items paired with the wine, it does not include dinner service).

With only 25 tickets available, purchase your ticket now and save $10.00 with your 2014 SCYPA membership (please visit www.scypa.ca/membership for more information on SCYPA membership). This is a members-only event, however spouses/partners of members are more than welcome to attend as well!

Ci Vediamo Li ~ See you there.

Networking Essentials with Chris Leader Recap

Despite the ridiculously cold weather on Tuesday, about a dozen folks showed up at Williams for the January 2014 SCYPA Educational event with Chris Leader. The group enjoyed a free lunch (sandwiches, wraps, veggies and deserts with coffee and tea!) and a fantastic talk by Chris Leader of Leader’s Edge Training.

Chris spoke for almost an hour on a variety of subjects from networking to prospecting to CRM systems to goal setting and everything in between. Everyone came away with a variety of tips and tricks applicable to most young professionals and small business owners.

Thanks to everyone that braved the cold weather to come out an take part in the first SCYPA Educational Event of 2014, and a huge thanks to Chris Leader to coming out and speaking to us! We’re looking forward to planning more educational events throughout 2014, so if you have a specific topic or theme you’d like to suggest, let us know in the comments below.

2013 Holiday Party

Last week the Simcoe County Young Professionals Association celebrated the holiday season with our annual Christmas party at Donaleigh’s. The weather probably curbed some of the turn-out, but for those of us that fought through the snow and wind to make it there, we had a great time! The atmosphere in the private downstairs room was great, and the food at Donaleigh’s is always fantastic. If you weren’t there, you missed out!

In addition, we collected $265 in gift certificates for Youth Haven Barrie – that’s fantastic! Youth Haven Barrie even wrote us a note (read it here!) to say thanks! Way to go, SCYPA!

2013 SCYPA Award Winners

Last Thursday, on November 21st, the Simcoe County Young Professionals Association held our annual awards evening at Michael & Marion’s. 30-40 people attended the social event, including the Mayor of Barrie, Jeff Lehman, who was in attendance to speak to the group. We had a fantastic evening as we were bombarded with a plethora of appetizers and food (courtesy of Michael & Marion’s).

The first award handed out was the Young Entrepreneur of Year Award, sponsored by Kristian Robillard of Sunlife Financial. The nominees were Lee Whitaker, Michael Holmberg and Sara Walton, with the winner being Michael Holmberg. In addition to helping several not-for-profit organizations in the city and serving as Event Co-ordinator on the SCYPA Board, Michael runs his own accounting business: Holmberg Accounting Chartered Accountant. With a client-first focus to an approachable working style, Michael provides all involved with the best opportunity to find success. Congratulations Michael!

The second award presented was the Community Involvement by a Young Professional, sponsored by the Planned Giving Counsel of Simcoe County. The nominees were Tim L. Walker and Rosanna Trapani, with the winner being Tim L. Walker.  Tim is a great contributor to the Barrie community.  He gives back in many forms and spends a great deal of his time volunteering.  In addition to being nominated to the position of chair of SCYPA, Tim also volunteers in kids ministry at Connexus Community Church and has participated in several fundraising events for causes like Prostate Cancer and Big Brothers Big Sisters, raising the most money for the PSA Challenge (prostate cancer) and the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake.  Congratulations Tim!

The final award presented was the Young Professional of the Year Award, sponsored by Anthem Mortgage Group. The nominees were Sarah Hahn, Graydon Ebert, Cesia Green, Krisitian Robillard and David Thompson. The voting was so close, we actually had a tie!  The co-winners of the 2013 SCYPA Young Professional of the Year Award are Sarah Hahn & Krisitian Robillard.  Sarah has recently been called to the Ontario Bar and is working hard to grow her municipal litigation practice. Despite her busy work schedule, she participates in many community endeavours. She is on the Board of SCYPA and Youth Haven Barrie. This year she took part in Simcoe County fundraisers such as the Rotary Fun Run and the Orillia Dragon Boat races.  Kristian represents what a Young Professional should be. He is always present throughout the YP community, meeting people, making connections and helping new members learn about the Barrie Business/networking communities.  Congratulations Sarah & Krisitian!

Thanks to everyone who nominated and voted on the awards, thanks to Michael & Marion’s for hosting, and thanks to the award sponsors! It was a fantastic evening – a fitting way to celebrate some of the outstanding young professionals in Simcoe County.

October Educational Event Recap

Last week we had our first Educational Event of the fall at the MacLaren Art Centre. We met in the morning, which may have been too early for some people, so if you couldn’t make it out, here’s a recap of what you missed!

There are many ways to gain access to art and culture through the MacLarenArtCentre. Participate in our Art Rental and Sales Programme to purchase or rent an original piece of contemporary art for your home or office. Free consultations are available. You may wish to become a Maclaren Benefactor or Junior Benefactor, a membership that offers numerous perks including one free work of art on loan to you for one year. We also host an annual “Off the Hook” silent auction and fundraiser. This is an opportunity to support the gallery and attend a fun event – you may even take home a work of art! To learn more about these programmes please refer to the links below.

October Social at Brewery Bay

Brewery BayFor our October Social, we wandered up Highway 11 to Orillia (we are the Simcoe County Young Professionals Association, you know) to Brewery Bay. Even though it was a relatively small turn out, it was an excellent event. We had their private room reserved (which was quite nice!), and Brewery Bay provided us with ample (free!) appetizers. Add to that a cookie skillet, some great networking and drinks, and you have yourself an event worth attending.

While we probably won’t head up to Orillia again for a while, hopefully the Orillians (?) that came out will make their way down to Barrie for the occasional social in upcoming months!
